For most divers a trip to the Galapagos Islands is a lifetime dream. For a handful of fortunate divers, that dream will come true aboard Lammer Law. Diving in the Galapagos cannot be compared to many other dive destinations. Although the islands are located directly on the equator, the water can get cold. The sea life is bounteous with a bizarre mixture of cold and warm water species. Large animals abound. Sharks, sea lions, rays and turtles are seen on nearly every dive. For a photographer, diving here will be a lifetime experience.
Requirements and Skill Level - A certification card and at least 60 logged open water dives is required to dive on Lammer Law and in the Galapagos. Galapagos diving is for experienced divers only, meaning that you have previously encountered cool water, poor visibility, large animals, rough surface conditions, strong currents and can deal calmly with the unexpected. If you have a medical problem but can dive, a letter from your physician is required. You should consider DAN Traveling Diver Insurance or similar as Medivac costs are very high.
Currents and Water Temperature - The currents at most of the dive sites can change at any time. The same dive spot which may have had a ripping current on the first dive, might be completely still on the second. You'll often feel changes in water temperature with the upwelling of the deep ocean currents. The water temperature is generally between 65 and 75 degrees F but can sometimes be warmer or cooler.
Wetsuits - Layering is a good way to go, starting with a wetsuit in the 3mm to 5mm range for diving around Darwin and Wolf Islands. For those cooler dives you can add a vest, hood and gloves for increased warmth. Divers who typically get cold doing multiple dives might consider bringing a thicker 7mm wetsuit. Lammer Law does not carry additional wetsuits on board so make sure you come prepared.
Visibility will likely change with the currents. Visibility of 100' plus is not uncommon, but be prepared for a variety of conditions that change quickly.
